Connell Emergency Department and adjacent Express Care Center Area is staffed by board-certified emergency physicans and care for more than 30,000 patents a year providing patients and families with the best of both worlds: cutting-edge emergency medicine delivered in a community setting.  The three-story, 45,700 square foot facility houses the latest advancements in technology - including Boston's only 256-slice CT scanner in an ED - and provide a comfortable, private setting for patients and families. The modern façade links the hospital with the surrounding community as the ground-floor lobby opens to a public plaza at the corner of Washington and Cambridge streets.

ED Wait Times
Effective July 11, St. E's ED showcases online and on our Brighton Center billboard our door-to-doctor time rather than the wait time for being brought into a room. This does not affect how soon patients are seen and cared for in the St. E's ED, but it changes the time as diplayed on the Bighton Center billboard. The average wait time for a room has been eight minutes, as it has been reflected on the billboard over the last two years, while the average door-to-doc time at St. E's is 32 to 33 minutes, well below the national average of 56 minutes.

The services offered by St. Elizabeth's Emergency Department include:

  • Pediatric, adult, ob/gyn and psychiatric emergency medical services
  • In-house consultants for all medical and surgical specialties
  • Immediate access to critical hospital services such as diagnostics and imaging, allowing for expedited evaluation and treatment
  • Coordinated care throughout the spectrum of medical specialties resulting in comprehensive medical care
  • Patient-centered care that honors privacy and the patient and family’s right to participate in care
  • Expedited triage, bedside registration and 32 treatment rooms reduce wait time and free patient valet parking means faster service
  • Access to emergency cardiac catheterization and the Stroke Center 24 hours a day
  • Express Care Area for minor medical and surgical problems that require immediate attention
  • Occupational Health Center that provides a range of medical services and wellness programs to promote a healthy work force
  • A Department of Public Health designated Travel Clinic that provides travel medicine services, including pre-travel and infectious disease consultations, vaccinations and immunizations

We also work closely with Boston Emergency Medical Services, providing medical control orders to medics in the field, and we conduct clinical research on cardiac and pulmonary patients.
