St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center Receives Gold Seal of Approval™


St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, a Caritas Christi family hospital located in the heart of Brighton, has received the Gold Seal of Approval from The Joint Commission on. This certification was awarded for demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission's national standards in health care quality and safety. St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center received this Gold Seal of Approval in November 2007 and accreditation is effective for three years.

In addition, St. Elizabeth’s is the only hospital in Massachusetts to receive The Joint Commission’s prestigious “Certificate of Distinction for Primary Stroke Centers,” which recognizes centers that make exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke care.

The mission of The Joint Commission is to “continuously improve the safety and quality of care provided to the public through the provision of health care accreditation and related services that support performance improvement in health care organizations.” In keeping with this mission, The Joint Commission accredits and certifies more than 15,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States through an independent accreditation process. Joint Commission accreditation and certification is recognized by patients, clinicians and health care systems nationwide as the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval.

In addition to the Gold Seal of Approval, St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center also received the following Special Quality Award from The Joint Commission:

  • Hospital Quality Alliance Participant, which designates that a hospital has agreed to submit performance measures for publication on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) website. 
  • Annual Get With The Guidelines — Stroke, which partners with the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association to reduce disability and death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The recognition demonstrates adherence to core Get With The Guidelines measures.
  • ACS Bariatric Surgery Center Network Accreditation — Level 2b. To improve quality and facilitate access to care for morbidly obese patients, the American College of Surgeons Bariatric Surgery Center Network (ACS BSCN) Accreditation Program recognizes facilities that implement and maintain certain physical resources, human resources, standards of practice, and documentation of outcomes of care as Bariatric Centers.  

Commission on Cancer Three-Year Approval with Commendation

The Cancer Care Program at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center received the prestigious Commission on Cancer (CoC) Three-Year Approval with Commendation. St. Elizabeth’s is one of only a handful of hospitals in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to receive this distinction, which demonstrates quality care in a state-of-the-art setting. A facility receives a Three-Year Approval with Commendation following an on-site visit with a physician surveyor evaluating a variety of components of a cancer care program.

The Commission on Cancer, established in 1922 by the American College of Surgeons, is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival rates and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive, quality care.
