Once performed only at major teaching hospitals, the latest surgical procedures are now regularly offered in community hospitals, keeping patients closer to home. At Holy Family, we are proud to embrace this trend, and to offer our patients not only the best in medical technology, but the finest physicians in our community to see them through. We offer a number of surgical services, including surgical day care and endoscopy, and top notch facilities such as our operating room and post anesthesia care unit.
Holy Family Hospital prides itself on caring for your family as if it were our own. You can have every confidence in the skill of our expert doctors, nurses, technicians and support staff. Team members are friendly, respond promptly and keep you informed of the plans for your surgery.
We try to make sure you are fully informed. You will have received information from many sources including your surgeon’s office, your pre-admission surgical evaluation interview and your pre-operative caregivers. If you are in need of more information or unsure about anything, ask any one of our health care professionals or physicians. For detailed information, please visit our Guide for Patients and Visitors.
Surgical day care at Holy Family allows a patient to register in the morning, have their surgery, and be discharged the same day, allowing for a comfortable at-home recovery. Our team of registered nurses, specially trained surgeons, anesthesiologists, technologists, and other qualified professionals work with each patient to insure a smooth visit from arrival to discharge. Home care is also available to those patients who require follow up.
Endoscopy is one of the many procedures performed in the Holy Family surgical day care unit. During this procedure, a doctor uses a flexible tube with a light and camera attached to it in order to view pictures of the digestive tract on a color video monitor. This imaging allows the doctor to diagnose issues of the small or large intestine, as well as related areas such as the esophagus, stomach, or colon. In addition, a special form of endoscopy, called endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreaticography, is available. This procedure produces images of the pancreas and gallbladder.
Endoscopy is a key element in diagnosing such issues as stomach pain, ulcers and gastritis. In addition, a physician can use the procedure to remove polyps from the colon, or to remove tissue for biopsy.
Holy Family has nine operating rooms and a 16-space post anesthesia care unit. In addition to board-certified surgeons, our OR team includes board-certified anesthesiologists and registered nurses who are specially trained in both perioperative and operative procedures. Our OR's technology is continually upgraded to enhance patient safety and operational efficiency. We conduct over 400 on-site day surgeries per month.
Following a day surgery procedure, patients at Holy Family recover in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), where we offer skilled, individual patient care, as well as any necessary pain management. The PACU is equipped as a critical care unit, and is staffed by a team of registered nurses who are specially trained to work with post-operative patients.
The Holy Family PACU is made up of 16 recovery spaces where patients can rest until they meet discharge criteria. Recuperation time varies, but most patients stay one to two hours after a procedure. Prior to leaving the hospital, a patient will meet one more time with a member of our staff to discuss any prescription needs and/or any home care instructions.
